Instinctive Patterns show in NYC

I’m so thrilled that one of the paintings from my Indigo series has been selected for a show in New York City! The exhibition, curated by the non-profit arts organization Visionary Projects, features 20 abstract artists from the US and Canada.

This amazing opportunity all started with my goals for 2023, which were to create 3 bodies of work, paint larger, and submit to a few different juried exhibitions. I was leaving on a long trip in mid-February (visiting family in Oklahoma and Texas), so that left me only 6 weeks to paint my first body of work. Nothing like a deadline for motivation!

I showed up in the studio almost every day and kept plugging away. I knew I wanted to work with blues and connect that to my roots in fiber arts and indigo dyeing (see my other post on that).

Some days it felt like not much was happening and my morale was low, but I kept heading down to the studio and some paintings started emerging. By early February, I had nine canvases close to completion - two 20x24’s, four 16"x20’s, and three 8x10’s - plus a few pieces on paper. I’ve heard it said that creativity comes when you show up and that’s really the way it felt for me with this series.

I finally got all the pieces finished, titled, photos taken, etc., and sent my submission off to Visionary Projects just a couple of days before leaving on my trip. It was a great feeling to have met my own personal goals and that was enough for me. So it was a wonderful surprise when, right in the middle of my trip, I got the email saying that out of 300 entries, mine was one of 22 paintings that had been accepted. I was over the moon! I’m so honored to be showing alongside some artists that I truly admire.

This exhibition, the first “bigger” one for me, has added significance because it’s in NYC, where I lived 30 years ago and first started taking drawing classes. Back then, being an artist felt like a faraway dream. It’s been such a long journey to get to this point and I’m really trying to savor it.

The show opened Friday, March 17 with a well-attended private event and will run through July 15, 2023 at: The Yard Flatiron North, 246 5th Ave, New York, If you’re in the area, you can stop by weekdays from 10am - 5pm or schedule a private viewing by reaching out to info@visionaryprojects.org. You can also view/purchase the artwork online through the Visionary Projects website.

Update as of January 2024: all the paintings in the Indigo series are now available on my website.

Be sure to sign up for my mailing list to be the first to hear when new work is available.
